Homemade Mashed Potatoes

Every year for Thanksgiving I make my homemade mashed potatoes. Well this year they came out extra great!

Items Used:

  • 10 potatoes
  • 1 1/2 sticks of butter
  • 1 cup of milk
  • Seasoning salt & black pepper
How I did it:

I rinsed and peeled the potatoes and cut them in 1"x1" squares, I put them in a big pot of water and boiled them until they became super soft. Then I drained the water and mashed the squares, added the milk and butter and seasonings to taste. I then whipped out my handy dandy hand mixer and mixed until they became nice and fluffy.

By the end of the night this huge bowl was completely empty, my spuds were a hit!

Enjoy!

Sponsor Spotlight: Curls (Winter Wonderland Giveaway)

Effortless, frizz free curls
Created with Certified Organic Ingredients and Exotic Oils hand pressed in Bali

No parabens, sulfates, silicones, mineral oil, artificial colors, or animal by parts.

Curls was founded by Mahisha Dellinger, a multi ethnic woman who understands the need of naturally curly hair. She overcame many costly challenges while trying to find the right products for her curly hair type. Over the years she spent thousands on hair care products and was never able to find a complete line for her hair type. When she couldn't find the products made with her hair type in mind she created her own kitchen concoctions. Soon after friends and family began requesting samples of her homemade coconut oil treatments, leave in conditioner, and jojoba moisturizer.

Curls has expanded after gaining popularity worldwide to include a customer base of all ethnicities, not just made for only multi ethnic curlies. Curls is made for Caucasians, African Americans, Latinas, Asians and many more.

Curls and Curly Q's  (a line of products specifically made for our littlest curlies) contain an exclusive blend of natural oils and quality ingredients, such as aloe leaf juice, panthenol, mango, shea and murmur butter.

You can purchase curls products directly from their website and you can also find some products at your local Rite Aid and Target locations.

Wisely Made Hair Products: Review

I have been using these products only in my hair for the past few weeks so that I can provide an accurate review.

When my products came in the mail the box they came in was very sturdy and well constructed, the company's name was labeled right on front and the box was wrapped with a beautiful decorative ribbon that matched the company's logo.

When I opened the box each product was individually wrapped in a gorgeous tissue paper with the same matching ribbon

I especially love the small details of the packaging. To me it shows pride and care in their products and I appreciate that :)

On to the goodies, I received the following:

From Left to Right: Hair Oil, Resurrection Hair Treatment, Hair Pomade, Shampoo, Conditioner ARV: $99
MaxiMoisture Hair Oil 8oz $18.00
Ingredients: Ingredients: Persea gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Cocos nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Silybum Marianum Seed (Milk Thistle Seed) Oil, Olea europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Achillea millefolium (Yarrow) Leaf Extract, Salvia officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract, ( Equisetum arvense) Horsetail Extract, Utica dioica (Nettle) Leaf Extract, Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Ricinus communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil (and) Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Seed Oil, Azadirachtin indica (Neem) CO2 Extract, Calendula officinalis (Calendula) CO2 Extract, Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Oil, Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea Tree) Oil, Citrus paradisi (Grapefruit) Oil, Calendula officinalis (Calendula) Flower

Directions: Use as a hot oil treatment or daily moisturizer on your scalp and/or hair.

Color: Yellow

Consistency: like oil :)

My Thoughts: I used this hair oil as an everyday or as needed oil treatment for my scalp and hair for added shine and when taking down my braids and twists. I like the consistency and the smell. A little goes a long way and I believe this bottle will last a really long time which is great!

This is the amount I used for my hair.

Resurrection Hair Treatment 8oz $22.50

Unrefined Social Justice Butyrospermum parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit, Aloe barbadensis (Organic Aloe) Leaf Juice, Water, Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Lavandula officinalis (Lavender) Extract, Mentha piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract, Rosa damascena (Rose), Extract, Yucca Schidigera (Yucca) Leaf Extract, Equisetum arvense (Horsetail) Leaf Extract, Urtica dioica (Nettle) Leaf Extract, Cymbopogon citratus (Lemongrass) Extract, Melissa officinalis (Melissa) Leaf Extract, Persea gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Cannabis sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil, Olea europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Kosher Glycerin, Emulsifying wax, DL-panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Egg Yolk Powder, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Honey, Acacia Gum, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Palm Stearic Acid, Citric Acid and Silver Citrate (Tinosan SDC), Potassium Sorbate
Directions: Massage from scalp to hair ends on damp hair cover with a shower cap; apply heat for 15-30 minutes then rinse. Use once a week or as often as needed.

Color: Purple
Consistency: Thinner cream

My Thoughts:
I tried this on damp hair like the directions suggested prior to washing my hair I put a plastic shower cap on and then sat under my hooded dryer for 20 min. This product was a little messy to put on so I had to make sure my hair towel was draped across my shoulders. I am not fond of the smell at all but then again I am sensitive to smells. This hair treatment had my hair feeling extremely soft after using it!

Directions: Use daily as a moisturizer on scalp and/or for styling to result in hair that is healthy, strong, and sensational.

Color: Yellow
Consistency: Thick Buttery

My Thoughts:
I used this pomade daily on my hair for styling, buns, ponytails, twist outs and braid outs. I love that it is super thick and not greasy at all. This jar will last a really long time as well which is always a plus.

My Thoughts:
I have used this shampoo about once a week or so and I love the smell! The lather is great and I only need to use one application, no repeat is necessary in my case. I love this shampoo it works great at cleaning my scalp  without stripping my hair of it's natural oils.

MaxiMoisture Nettle & Hibiscus Conditoner 8oz $17.50
Ingredients: Aqua (Purified Water), Certified Organic herbal blend of Rosa Rubiginosa (Organic Rosehip), Anthemis Nobilis (Organic Chamomile), Lavandula Angustifolia (Organic Lavender), Equisetum Arvense (Organic Horsetail herb), Tagetes Erecta (Organic Marigold), Arctium Lappa (Organic Burdock Root), Helianthus Annuus (Organic Sunflower) Oil, Citrus Grandis (Organic Grapefruit) extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Organic Rosemary) Extract, Persea Gratissima (Certified Biodynamic Avocado) Oil, Macadamia Ternifolia (Certified Biodynamic Macadamia) Oil, Certified Organic Lotus Bean Gum; Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Oil Alcohol (natural emulsifier), Aloe Barbadensis (Organic Aloe Vera) Extract, Organic Guar Gum, Sea Brine Electrolyte, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Extract (Vitamin C), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil, Avena Sativa protein (Oatmeal protein), Alpha Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Organic Glycerin (Vegetable), Biotin (Vitamin B7), Hibiscus sabdariffa (Hibiscus) Extract, Urtica Dioica (Stinging Nettle) Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Essential Oil, Hydroxymethylglycinate, Trifolium Pratense (Canadian wildcrafted Red Clover) Oil – Certified Vegan Friendly

Color: a light brown/cream color
Consistency: Thick and creamy

My Thoughts:
I love that this conditioner is super thick and creamy I think it works extremely well with adding the moisture back into my hair after using the shampoo. However, it does not provide enough "slip" for me while detangling. But other than that I loved it!

Here are a few pics of my twist out using only Wisely Made products, my hair has been extremely soft and moisturized for days even, all I had to do was just wet it with water to reactivate all of the product again, I love it!

Look at the shine! It was sooo soft and non greasy :)
This package of products will be a prize in the upcoming Winter Wonderland Giveaway Dec 1-6th. So come back and enter to win for your chance to win!

Enjoy!

Sponsor Spotlight: Wisely Made (Winter Wonderland Giveaway)

Wisely Made was founded by Fabiola who is committed to operating her business with integrity all while keeping prices affordable as well as maintaining Wisely Made's reputation for high quality products that are created with the spirit of excellence.

Her brand began out of her own personal hair journey:
(Taken from the website:)

Birth of a Brand
I began my journey into natural health and beauty in June 2006. Like so many women, I was tired of the pain, suffering, and high cost of using chemical relaxers on my hair. I was frustrated with not being able to get my hair wet and not being able to scratch my scalp when I felt like it. And one day, I decided that enough was enough. I wasn’t going to let unhealthy, unpleasant hair care preparations rule my life.

The decision was easy. Making peace with the ‘natural’ state of my hair was a little more difficult. It felt dry and looked dull. I suddenly I realized that all the harsh chemicals I had been putting in my hair since the age of five had robbed me of a naturally healthy head of hair. And that made me wonder what else those chemicals were doing to me.

As a Registered Nurse, health is very important to me...especially my health and the health of my family. So I began doing research into the hair care industry. I was shocked to learn about the plethora of dangerous ingredients that are found health and beauty products. I found numerous studies that spoke of growing chemical contamination in the human body, and others that linked chemical exposure with human disabilities and disease. I discovered that even low levels of exposure can, over time, have truly toxic effects.

I realized with horror what I had been putting myself and my family at risk for years!

It was then that I made a commitment to creating safe, personal care products that I could feel good about using in my home. I tested, tried, refined, and turned my kitchen into a ‘test lab’ for the next two years. And as time went on, something amazing happened: my dry, dull hair began to flourish. The texture improved noticeably and the natural sheen returned. My overall health improved, too, as did the health of my family.

Soon friends began to ask what I was doing differently. Once I told them, they wanted to try my products, too. So did their friends...and family...and colleagues. Thus, Wisely Made™ was born.

Wisely Made's mission is to simply to help men and women restore and maintain their bodies to as close to a state of natural 'perfection' as possible. Their natural hair and skin care products use only the best natural ingredients available in their manufacturing process.

Taking The Stage Featuring Untrained Hair Mom

Hiya!
We haven't had a Taking The Stage feature in forever but today you are in luck. We have a good blogging friend of mine Brooke From Untrained Hair Mom

Hello, Diva Locks’ readers! My name is Brooke, I am from Untrained Hair Mom and I am known for having some wild and crazy hair! I want to thank Diva Locks for featuring me on their Taking the Stage segment!

What is your current hair care daily/weekly/monthly/yearly routine?
I wash my hair every 2-3 days, I do use a sulfate shampoo most of the time. When I use a natural shampoo I must wash my hair daily to keep it from looking oily. I condition each time I wash and use a Black Tea Spritz for shine and moisture. I typically let my hair air dry, but occasionally I blow try it. I also flat iron it every so often, but most of the time I just wear it as is.

What are your staple products?
I use Herbal Essence Body Envy shampoo and Herbal Essence Hydrate Me conditioner, if I am going to blow dry my hair I will add a little HE Body Envy hair mousse.

Favorite hair style?
My go to style is the bump in the front pinned up with bobby pins and sprayed with hair spray. (I like the bump in the front for my hair too! Great minds think alike :)

Worst hair mishap?
My worst hair mishap has got to be the time a friend and I attempted to dye my hair black and red...it came out a blue-ish purple and pink...it still looked cool though.

Any advice you would like to offer our readers?
Be careful with bleach and hair dyes...I recommend going to a professional for your hair color needs.

Here are a few colors and styles I've had:

Thank you Brooke for sharing your routine and awesome hairstyles with us! For more information on Brooke please check out her site where she writes about natural hair care, product reviews, giveaways, and living a green life plus a whole lot more over at Untrained Hair Mom.
